Winter Health Tips

During winter it’s time to change our cooking habits to ones that optimise our body heat and provide more energy. Root vegetables such as sweet potato, pumpkin, parsnip and carrots are great additions to a meal as they are denser and more ‘warming’. Using cooking methods that require longer times, such as baking  and pressure cooking also provides our body with the best adaptation to the winter weather. Stewed fruits and compotes are wonderful way to eat fruit in colder weather too. While this is a great start to maintaining immune balance, here are other tips you may find helpful:-




  1. If you are following a health protocol: Are you taking your vitamins and supplements daily and as prescribed? Get back on track now if you have let that routine fall away. You may feel better but now is the time to build resilience.

  2. Echinacea is one of the most researched medicinal herbs today. It is widely used in western herbal medicine for its immune modulating effects. Chronic and acute infections are a common presentation in my clinic and Echinacea is my ‘go-to’ herb for helping recovery. It is considered to be antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory.

  3. Avoid sugary foods, they promote candida growth in the gut which affects digestion and may cause bloating. Up to 90% of our immune system resides in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract so look after your digestive health.

  4. Eat pleny of foods that promote an alkaline body like vegetables, fruit, fresh salad greens and filtered water. An acidic body creates disease so keep coffee, alcohol, sugar and drugs to a minimum. Be sure to laugh a lot and be happy as these also create and alkaline system.

  5. Should you need to take antibiotics, be sure to take a probiotic (health promoting gut flora) daily for a week to two afterwards. This will restore a healthy balance of flora to the gut and protect your immune system.

  6. Allow time for rest and relaxation in your schedule. We often forget about ourselves in our busy life until we become rundown.
